How Often Should You Get a New Headshot?

If you are a professional who has or is a brand - meaning who you are is central to what your business is or does – and if your appearance does not really change much day to day, month to month, you should have your headshots refreshed about every two years, just to keep things fresh and up to date.

Sometimes there are reasons to get new headshots sooner than that. Here are a few:

  1. New role or new industry. Finally got that promotion? Moved from software into acting? From coding into baking? From teaching into personal finance? Every profession and every professional level has a style, a look, and it can often pays to align with that look.
  2. New look. Weight fluctuates, you have bangs now, you’re wearing glasses now, you’ve let your hair go grey or grow long. Or maybe you have done a styling session and are working to project a new professional look with a whole new closet. In any case, you always want your headshot to present you as you are showing up in the world. Think of your headshot as an employee you are paying to show up for you 24/7/365. If you are changing, that employee needs to change accordingly.
  3. Need Variety. None of us is just one thing. You might want to have one headshot on LinkedIn, but something entirely different on a personal, side-hustle website, or have a different look for speaking gigs. If you need some variety, let’s set up a discovery call and start kicking some Pinterest boards back and forth to zero in on ideas about how to present your many facets. You’ll save lots of time and money if you use one headshot session to capture multiple looks.

No one is going to look at a single headshot of you and be able to imagine all of the things you are or can be. If you are setting out on a new path or making a change, it’s your job to help people understand or imagine that change, and a new headshot is a great way to do that.
